PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Mechanics plays a pivotal role in influencing biological growth, development, and disease across multiple scales. However, current modeling research in growth and morphogenesis significantly lags behind experimental studies, posing a considerable obstacle to disease diagnosis and treatment. Therefore, advanced mathematical and computational modeling of soft tissue and disease-related phenomena holds immense research significance for the health and economic prosperity of Europe. Led by Prof. Davide Bigoni and Dr. Yangkun Du, this project aims to address these challenges by developing multi-scale and multi-physics modeling for soft tissues ("MULTI-SOFT"). The project investigates the nonlinear mechanical response, growth, instability, and post-buckling behavior of biological soft tissues, aiming to enhance our understanding of soft tissues and develop tools for their identification and treatment. It adopts a comprehensive approach, integrating theoretical, computational, and experimental perspectives, and collaborates with the Solid and Structural Mechanics Group at the University of Trento, Italy, Prof. Gerhard Holzapfel at the Graz University of Technology, Austria, and Prof Giovanni Noselli at the International School for Advanced Studies (SISSA), Italy.
